History
Kitchener was originally settled by German Mennonite families in the early 1800s, growing from a small village called Berlin incorporated in 1854 to a thriving industrial city by the early 20th century. Due to anti-German sentiment during World War I, the city changed its name from Berlin to Kitchener in 1916, honoring British military leader Lord Kitchener.
