History
Mississauga’s history began with its roots in the Mississaugas, an Ojibwa band who settled around the Credit River and Lake Ontario shores centuries ago, with the land formally acquired by the British Crown in 1805 through Treaty 13A. Originally known as Toronto Township, the area gradually developed through small settlements that grew into villages like Port Credit and Streetsville, eventually amalgamating in 1968 to form the Town of Mississauga, which became a city in 1974.
